Amazon says it no longer uses secrecy agreements when it plans data centres

TechCrunch· 3 Oct

AWS chief executive Matt Garman wrote that Amazon has stopped using nondisclosure agreements with government agencies when it seeks approval for new data centres. Secrecy has been a main complaint about these projects. Garman says more than 100 data centre moratoriums are being considered across the US, and New York has paused permits for large sites for a year. He argues data centres do not raise power prices or use much water.

  • If a data centre is proposed near your business, ask the council for the planning documents and the expected grid connection, since power and water use are now public questions.
  • Watch your own electricity contract terms: where data centres cluster, grid upgrades can feed into business tariffs, so check fixed-rate options before renewal.
