GPT-6.1 Sol: close to OpenAI's top model at a fifth of the price
OpenAI released GPT-6.1 Sol one week after GPT-6 Sol. It says the model nearly matches GPT-6 Astra while costing a fifth as much per input and output token. At low reasoning effort its error rate fell from 11.4% to 7.7%, and across all settings it stays within 1.9% of Astra. It is in ChatGPT Work and Codex for paid plans.
- If you pay for Astra through the API, rerun a week of real jobs on 6.1 Sol and compare cost per finished task.
- Use the cheaper model for routine document and spreadsheet work, and keep Astra only where you can see a difference.
